Whenever I see my mom, she always brings a bag of pistachios. A whole Costco-sized bag, the kind that takes up half of my suitcase. And since I live in a New York apartment, it basically consumes half of my apartment as well. When I was younger and my mom gave me these giant bags of pistachios, I’d shake my head in exasperation. I’d sigh as I rearranged my suitcase to tetris this comically sized bag of nuts. When I got home, I’d spend time elaborately rearranging my pantry to make them fit, huffing the whole time and thinking to myself:
I love pistachios! I remembered the day I learned the word in Mandarin. It was in the context of calling someone 开心果. I love that it can be used to refer to someone who makes others happy/laugh.
It's only when we're older that we can reflect back and see the kind gestures we overlooked when we were young.
Great article, thank you! This is lovely and is now added to my store of Chinese vocabulary 😁
Thank you Debbie, glad it was helpful!
My mom and dad cannot send me away from the house (when I visit) without tubs of leftovers and a bag of fresh fruit. Such a love language. ❤️
Yes! Food needs to be defined as a love language!
Pistachios are love ❤️
I pistachio you ❤️

Yes!! 你是我的开心果!
Don’t think my mom refers that to me though, think I caused her too much stress growing up 😂
I really need to get back to learning Mandarin cause just reading that sentence made me so happy 😅
🥰🥰🥰 听到你这么说让我也很高兴!
中文不像其他任何语言,我很高兴学会了它 😊✨️
